With letterpress sheet of "Book Society of Twelve" circulating library with details of previous borrowers in a manuscript tipped-in to the beginning of volume II. An extra-illustrated copy, with seven plates to each volume, predominantly drawn by Heath after Westall. Comprised of the poetical works of English poet and clergyman George Crabbe, who was best known for his early depictions of working class life and the realistic narrative form. Lord Byron, an avowed admirer of Crabbe's poetry, called him 'nature's sternest painter, yet the best'. CONDITION Bound in a smart half calf with paper-covered boards. Externally, excellent, with minor marking to leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with light scattered spotting, heavier to plates. Letterpress sheet tipped in to the front blank of volume II.
