Description: The Sultan of Turkey Illustrated London News 1854 This is a single sheet only, which is 170 years old. It was published in the Jan. 21, 1854, issue of The Illustrated London News. It measures 11 x 15.5 inches in size, and is in excellent and very attractive condition. It presents a beautiful, full-page wood-engraved portrait of the Sultan of Turkey riding a white horse, alongside a troupe of soldiers in full regalia. It is titled: THE SULTAN PROCEEDING TO MOSQUE, AT CONSTANTINOPLE. The subject of the scene is easily identifiable as Abdulmejid I, the 31st Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, who ruled from 1839-1861. On the reverse side of the page is a related article on the engraving, headed The Sultan Going to Mosque. This story is 39 lines of text in small print, which says, in part: The public attendance of the Sultan at Mosque is a duty held to be incumbent upon him by the ordonnances of the Koran, and sanctified by almost unbroken custom. . . . the custom is not insignificant in itself: it amounts to a repeated renewal of the acknowledgment that the Sultan, or Padisha, is but the agent of the Prophet upon earth; and that he can do nothing of his own will, but only what he is required and empowered to do by the Law, which is that of the Prophet. . . . his action is strictly circumscribed by a superior powerof whom the chief of the muftis, or Sheikh Islam, is the headwhose sanction must be previously had to all great measures of state policy. . . . the Sultan goes to Mosque in great state, amidst salvos of artillery, and accompanied by all the great officers and dignitaries of the empire; . . . the pachas alight, and assist their Royal master to descend from his splendidly-caprisoned charger. The costume of the Sultan on these occasions is not so gaudy as English readers might expect; his figure being concealed beneath the ample folds of a black cloak, fastened at the neck with a magnificent broach of brilliants. In his fez, also, is an aigrette of the same precious materials.
