1860's E. L. ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY SHOWROOM W/ WING CAMERA, BOSTON, MASS. STEREOVIEW

Description: Nineteenth century stereoview of the showroom of E. L. Allen in Boston, Mass. E. L. Allen is listed as a daguerreotypist on John Craig's online Daguerreian Registry where it mentions that he is listed also in the mercantile index in Boston as a dealer in photographic apparatus until the turn of the century. On the right margin is printed, "Allen, . . Photographer, No. 24 Temple Place, Boston." The stereoview shows a showroom with an abundance of images of all sizes arranged on tables, hung on displays, and sitting on shelves. A skylight can be seen in the ceiling. A large two part sign or banner can be seen near the ceiling on the upper right of the image. The words "Wing's Patent Camera" are printed on the signs. The Wing's Patent Camera probably refers to the Wing's Multiplying Camera made in the early 1860's which made multiple images on a collodion plate. The Wing's camera was created by Simon Wing of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Also on signs are the words, "Patent Signs" and "Orders". A woman sits as though waiting to have her photograph taken. A man stands near the woman facing in her direction. Initially I thought he was there to represent a customer looking over the offerings on the tables but I am wondering if he was there to demonstrate some other purpose. On the far left another man can be seen who is standing in back of a camera. His hand can be seen at the side of the camera as though he is adjusting something or is about to do something. The camera itself might be a Wing's Multiplying View Camera but I am not absolutely sure. It does resemble the image of that camera that I have in book references but on the stereoview the camera is pictured at the left side and is somewhat dark in contrast there and I am not familiar with that camera in person so I can't be sure. Since there is a sign for the Wing's camera, it is logical that it would be in the showroom. There appears to be at least one more camera on the table and possibly some plate holders. The stereoview measures 3 3/8 inches by 6 7/8 inches. The back is blank. There is some light soil to the yellow mat. The image has excellent contrast. The reference number for this item is #4116.
