Description: The 1935A $1 Experimental R & S notes were part of a U.S. Treasury experiment to test different types of paper durability for currency. These notes were printed in 1942 as part of an effort to see which type of paper would hold up better in circulation. To distinguish between the types, notes with a small “R” or “S” were printed on different paper compositions."R" Notes: These were printed on regular paper, similar to standard production."S" Notes: These were printed on a different, possibly more durable, type of paper. The goal was to determine if changing the paper could extend the lifespan of currency notes, saving costs on reprinting. Approximately 1,184,000 of each type (R and S) were made. After circulating for some time, the experiment concluded with no significant difference in durability between the two paper types, so no changes were made to regular note production based on this experiment.
