Little is known of the author aside from the fact he spent many years in Mexico where this book is set. While there are manyy theories as to the true identity of B Traven, nothing has been conclusively proven. It is widely believed that Traven is Ret Marut, a German stage actor and anarchist, however Marut denied being Traven, and remains only the best guess.
