Hardcover in publisher's original blue cloth with spine and front cover stamped in gilt and black, rear cover stamped in blind. Measures 10-1/2 x 7 inches; 339 pages, illustrated throughout with forty etchings by Paul Avril. First English edition, one in a series of illustrated English translations of 18th century French classics. Mildly erotic novel tells the story of a young Frenchman who is willed his eccentric uncle’s harem and finds himself literally seduced by the lifestyle it offers. The character of Uncle Barbassou was allegedly loosely based on Sir Richard Burton. Light overall wear to cover, text block is tight and fairly clean with only some soiling on a few pages. (see photos); otherwise very good overall condition; no owner markings, NOT EX-LIBRARY. Page edges are untrimmed. There are photos of some individual pages for what I thought was soiling, It appears that is largely ink transfer from images on the opposite pages. Biography: Édouard-Henri Avril (21 May 1849 – 28 July 1928) was a French painter and commercial artist. Under the pseudonym Paul Avril, he was an illustrator of erotic literature. His career saw collaboration with influential people like Octave Uzanne, Henry Spencer Ashbee and Friedrich Karl Forberg.See photos for more info.
