Description: Stloubrown’s Bygone Days "Let Bygones Be Back" Commemorative 2015 program for the ceremony in which the Illinois State Museum’s main building in Springfield was named for former U.S. Sen. Alan J. Dixon. Dixon (1927-2014), known to friends and supporters as “Al the Pal,” was a public servant from the time he was 19, serving in a local municipal position in his native Belleville, in the Illinois suburbs of St. Louis. He served in the General Assembly starting in 1971 and won election as state treasurer and secretary of state before winning in 1980 a seat in the U.S. Senate (vacated by Adlai Stevenson III, who would run unsuccessfully for governor). He was a moderate on Capitol Hill who was less known nationally than the counterparts with whom he served, Republican Charles Percy and Democrat Paul Simon, but he enjoyed a long string of electoral success until he sought a third term in 1992. That year, he lost in the Democratic primary to Carol Moseley Braun (1947- ) a former Illinois state legislator and Cook County recorder of deeds who joined the race because of her disgust at the way the Judiciary Committee treated Anita Hill, the law professor who accused Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. Dixon was a member of the committee (its chairman was President Joe Biden, who has expressed regret at how those 1991 confirmation hearings were conducted, and the questioning of Anita Hill). The museum was dedicated on May 13, 2015, at what proved to be the beginning of a two-year budget feud between two participants in the ceremony: newcomer GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner and long-time Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. The two battled over Rauner’s agenda and Madigan’s call for more revenue until Madigan succeeded in winning approval of an income-tax increase in 2017 after social services and other government functions had been decimated.
