Description: ANTIQUE Early 19th Century British Sheffield made J. Rodgers Quill Knife. An early 19th century quill knife made by J. Rodgers & Sons circa 1820. J. Rodgers was the most famous of all the Sheffield cutlers in Great Britain. Handle is bone, knife blade is steel. These were used specifically to cut a writing point onto the end of a quill feather pen. This practice was generally replaced by the mid 1800's when steel nibs were invented for the early modern ink pen. The factory marks of a Templar's cross and a star obtained in 1682 were employed by J. Rodgers to identify their products through the late 19th century. 6 1/8" overall, 3.75" handle. The crack in the handle can be felt by my fingernail but does not go through the entire thickness of the bone. It is an age crack. The blade does not move in the handle and is quite stable.
