Description: BIG COLOR: Mid-20th Century Architectural Scale Blenko Glass BIG COLOR defines and explores the revolutionary American ‘ArchitecturalScale’ genre introduced by Wayne Husted in 1954 and produced by the BlenkoGlass Company of West Virginia. The hardcover, cloth bound (with illustrated dust jacket) eighty-twopage book begins with a twenty-five page essay with original research notavailable elsewhere on the origins and range of the genre. At the heart of thebook is a four foot long centerfold showing all Architecturaldesigns in chronological order and with rarity noted. Dozens of full platephotographs documenting over a hundred and fifty examples in both comparativeand compositional images fill the latter portion of the book. A limited edition of 500 copies was printed and no furthercopies will be produced. Only several dozen copies remain available, exclusively distributed by Culture Object. The book was published by CultureObject on the occasion of the first authoritative exhibition of ArchitecturalScale Blenko, held in New York city, curated by leading expert, Damon Crain, and featuring 200 examples of the glass, largely the same examples documentedin the book. From this exhibition a collection of five pieces were purchasefrom the exhibition by the Toldeo Museum of Glass, now on permanent display intheir glass pavilion. On the occasion of the second exhibition produced by Damon, held at Culture Object gallery in New York in November 2023, a further sevenexamples were purchased by the Corning Museum of Glass, soon to be on permanentdisplay in their Twentieth Century galleries. Excerpt from dust jacket: "Architectural pieces are up to 46 inches (117 cm)tall; created to be of a scale substantial enough to engage with thearchitectural environment and elements like columns and stairs directly, unmediated by furniture. An artist at heart and in training; the defining drive ofHusted's tenure as resident designer for Blenko was his desire to createobjects that could only be seen as works of art. By altering scale to anextreme and unprecedented degree he struck on an enduring and compelling newgenre that suited the modern era, one that unequivocally demands to beconsidered as sculpture."
