Description: This is a rare March 31st, 1902 broadside (single page playbill) from the Fourteenth Annual production of the University of Pennsylvania's Mask and Wig Club presenting the musical "OLD KING COLE" at the Chestnut Street Opera House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ..... Written by WILLIAM ERNST, Jr. and CHARLES GILPIN III, the musical starred ARTHUR EDWARD HEALY in the title role and featured CRAIG SCHOFIELD MITCHELL, SYVESTER JAMES DEEHAN, WILLIAM OTTO MILLER, ALBERT WATSON MORTON, ROLLIN CANTWELL BORTLE, LEMUEL HOWELL DAVIS, CECIL BALTIMORE CALVERT, WALTER LEE SHEPPARD and WARREN FREDERIC MARTIN ..... Historical note: The musical is best remembered for the "Old King Cole" mural created by Philadelphia native MAXFIELD PARRISH in 1895 at the Mask and Wig Clubhouse. It was the first mural painted by the famed artist and illustrator and remained in the clubhouse for one hundred years until the Mask and Wig Club, due to an inability to protect the masterpiece, chose to auction the mural and three other original Parrish works at Christie's Auction House in New York City on May 23rd, 1996. The "Old King Cole" mural was purchased by a California collector for $662,500, at the time the highest price ever paid for a Maxfield Parrish work. (Christie's website) .....
