Description: GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a beautiful Chinese porcelain basket-form bowl or vessel. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE As an art form, only ceramics cover the entire forty-five century span of Chinese history. More than any other material, fired clay has served the needs and satisfied the aesthetic tastes of all segments of society in nearly every culture on earth. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The Chinese contribution to ceramic art is one of uncontested brilliance. In terms of their sheer production, technical innovation, artistic refinement, aesthetic diversity and global impact, the Chinese can claim the world's longest and foremost ceramic tradition. The origin of ceramics technology dates back 6000 years to the Neolithic period in China, and the related technologies and skills were continuously developed throughout Chinese history. Over the course of many dynasties, ceramic techniques slowly evolved. Innovations with under glazes, colors, materials including metallic ores, all propelled Chinese ceramics into a highly prized commodity for the imperial courts throughout China, and ultimately, for export. Ceramics fall under two major categories: low-fired earthenware (pottery), fired at 1000 c.; and high-fired stoneware and porcelain, fired at temperatures ranging from 1200 - 1350c. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Pottery was also valued in the Far East as elsewhere for its utility and relative affordability as attested by this highly practical and superbly crafted “basket weave” vessel, which reflects a special artistic sensibility which artisans bestowed upon everyday objects. It measures 6.5 inches in diameter by 4 inches in height (16.5 cm by 10.1 cm). It is in very good condition, including rubbing, minor chips and scratches. It dates probably to the mid-20th century, and shows a mark (artist's mark?) on the bottom. A superb example of a very distinctive style of Chinese ceramic art, it would make a fine collector’s piece and is guaranteed authentic.
