These irons were heavy, solid pieces of metal used for ironing clothes, and the name reflects their weight and the effort required to use them. In addition to this, they were also known for being sold without handles, as the multiple sizes of handles sold meant users likely already had them. The term "sad iron" helps distinguish these heavy irons from other types of irons used at the time. No handle included.
