Description: This very unusual, whimsical and somewhat bazar work by Carl Strathman (1866-1939) consists of a cover featuring a Commedia dell Arte character dancing with a heavily caricaturized Burgerlich gentleman with a top hat within a gold orb above the Jugendstil title Fin De Siecle. The heavily embossed boards of this work covered in textured cloth. The title page reads in full Fin de Siecle Launige Karrikaturen von C. Strathmann / Munchen / Franz Hanfstaengl. The portfolio originally came with 16 caricatures of which only four remain: Ein Moderner, Der erste Unterricht, Die Begrussung and Das Sekfruhstuck. Each caricature is unique and mordant in its own special way as can be seen by our photos. The prints themselves are in good condition but the mattes are crumbling somewhat at the edges. The two-sided heavy cover has a small repaired tear and some loose edges which I think at one time held folding sheets to protect the prints. This work was produced by Strathmann in 1893 in three languages. It is a great example of the German Jugentstil expression of Art Nouveau. Stock number SA2B-22
