This sword was carried by a General of the Nationalist Chinese Army. This sword has a Chinese General's name inscribed on the blade. The General was Zhang Zongchang. General Zongchang gifted this sword, and others like it, to Army Generals serving under him to motivate them, and to keep them loyal to him. General Zongchang changed allegiances often--to sides which paid more, to the side that appeared to be winning, etc. On the reverse side of the blade the inscription reads 'When you encounter difficulties, be brave.'. This sword would have been carried as early as 1912, and as late as 1926. This sword was likely made towards the beginning of this time period, as there was greater Japanese influence/involvement, and also greater Japanese quality work (like is exhibited in this sword) near the beginning of this time period. Similarly, there was more Chinese influence in Chinese swords towards the end of this time period. As mentioned above, this sword was made in Japan for the Chinese. The handle has fine carving--and intricate nanako-type stippling on the backstrap made up of literally hundreds and hundreds of individually made textured tool marks. Please take a close look at the detail in the photos. This sword has a cutting edge of 26 1/8" (66.3 cm) as measured from the blade tip to the bottom of the notch in the habaki. Condition:This sword is in good condition. A handsome sword. Some strands of the handle wire are missing. The blade developed rust over the years. The rust was later removed. There is some pitting remaining. The blade can be re-polished. I can put the buyer in touch with a polisher who can polish it for around $1200 if the buyer chooses to pay for a polish. This offering represents the rare opportunity to purchase an original ca.1912-1926 Chinese Army General’s Sword gifted by General Zhang Zongchang.
