I needed a tripod that was sturdy enough to hold my DSLR/ATMOS ninja rig while be versatile enough to go underslung, lateral, etc. I wasn't finding much I liked until a came upon this at B&H. The price was right and I have a boom from the same brand which has worked out really well so I decided to order. I figured it would at least be fine in the traditional and underslung positions but wasn't expecting it to be rock solid in the lateral. Well, I was again really surprised by the quality of this brand. It is heavy duty solid! Legs open and lock totally solid. The pan is very smooth and I would bet fluid regulated. It's smooth enough to use loose for nice pan shots. The ball joint is equally smooth and locks up solid when you want it to. The biggest and best surprise was the lateral position. There are click detents on the adjustment which locks them securely once the knob is tightened. There is no need for a counterweight on the boom, although you could put one under the legs (there is a metal loop attachment if needed). In the boom position, that previously mentions smooth pan can make some really amazing trolly-like shots. All in all I am very satisfied and wish they had a used to buy. My current tripod is very old so this new functionality is really great. Once I ran through the instructions a couple times I got it. This is very sturdy. The center ring/base is metal and solid. It has a hole you can hang a hook through for a counter weight and a 1/4" screw hole if you want to go that route. I plan on using it mostly for macro photography. I think this is going to do the job great! I just ordered a "macro rail" for it too. Lots of accessories. It is excellent for overhead shots and flat lays, which is the best part about it. This 79" is more height for the overhead shots which is so nice.
