Description: quarantine placard for: Cerebrospinal Meningitis This is a health quarantine placard printed on a light cardboard stock by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, which was required by law to be posted at premises where any resident was suffering from the disease of Meningitis. It is undated but is probably from the 1930s or 1940s, as I got it at auction more than 30 years ago in a lot which included various other ephemera which was dated in those two decades. And I believe the practice of such quarantines was generally phased out by the end of the 1950s. The sign measures 6.5x10.5 inches in size and is in very good, unused condition, with some general age browning, especially along its edges, as shown in the accompanying photo. The sign warns: Until this Notice is legally removed all persons not occupants of these premises are forbidden to enter. No person must leave this house or remove any article except by permission of an authorized agent of the Department of Health, By Act of Assembly, approved June 18th, 1895, any violation of the above order or the removal, defacing, covering up, taking down or destroying of this Placard is punishable by a Fine not exceeding $100, or by imprisonment. ************** mr3 [12142gsp] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
