Description: Original and rare photo of the USS Indianapolis ("Indy"), which tragically sank on its journey from Tinian after delivering the atomic bomb in 1945. This original 8 x 10 photo is signed by both J.M. Smeallie, the Indy's first captain and Commander Paul Bastedo, who commanded Sub Chaser Squadron One in WWI, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for destroying two enemy subs. He also served on the staff of the Commander of Naval Forces Operating in European Waters in WWI and served as a naval member of the Inter-Allied Commission. When the USS Indianapolis was first commissioned Bastedo was its first Executive Officer. Rare item of one of the most famous vessels in American naval history. There is some writing on the back of the frame, but I cannot make it out. Cmdr. Bastedo was from Buffalo, NY , where I obtained this.
