Description: This is a vintage hand carved mask from Guatemala. It likely dates from the 1950s depicting Pedro Alvarado for the Baile de la Conquista or Dance of the Conquest, a traditional Guatemalan dance that dramatizes the Spanish invasion of the K'iche kingdom in 1524. The mask has glass eyes, two additional holes in the brow and carved detail in beard and sideburns. The paint is in good condition with some signs of age. The glass eyes show slight loss of paint. Nice addition to a folkloric mask collection. Measures 9.5" by 8".
